Baba Bulleh Shah (1680-1758) was the great humanist, philosopher, rebel, internationalist, teacher and Sufi poet of all times. Baba ji was the disciple of Enayat Shah Lahori, who himself was a great Sufi of his time. Baba ji was born in a noble and aristocratic Saye’ad family but, as a result of Enayat’s teachings, he left the life of nobility and luxury and led quite simple and humble life. Baba ji was a great poet and use to sing his poetry in the streets of his city Kasur.

He was a keen supporter of poor and at all fronts he opposed oppression and exploitation of public by capitalistic class. Due to his anti-extremist and revolutionary behavior, he was given the ‘Fatwa’ of Kafir (Infidel) by religious authorities. Several times, he was bitten by the extremists but ‘he never bowed his neck’.

When he died he was thrown on the garbage outside the boundary of Kasur because he wasn’t allowed to bury in the Kasur. But as the time passed, with the increase in population Kasur also expanded and thus, at last, Baba ji’s grave got its place in his Kasur. After the death of Baba Bulleh Shah, the Government and Muslim Ulmas used their force strongly to destroy the Kalam (poetry) and reputation of Baba ji. Qawals (Asian classical singers) were strictly prohibited to sing the Kalam of Baba ji publicly. In British India, for about 100 years his Kalam was not allowed to be published.

It was after the ‘partition of 1947’ that Baba ji’s Kalam was published for the first time, when some Sikhs and Hindus disclosed some remnants of Baba ji’s Kalam. No doubt, a lot of his verses have been disappeared from the world but still we’ve his many beautiful verses which are famous all over the world and people of all castes and religions love and admire this remarkable poet of history.

1. Has Anyone Gone Through His Biography
As far as my knowledge is concerned he was not a practicing muslim as he did not follow Shariya (Muslim protocol). Curious persons can explore by themselves how he led his life.

2. true union
Baba Bhullah Shah was a lover of truth and his mission in life was to preach that.He was a decendant of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(p.b.u.h).
He was a true follower of Islam and that is why the people who claimed to follow Shariat(the way of life of the Prophet Muhammad)could not understand him,the difference between them was that between love(truth) and reason(shariat).

To him love was the only way of bringing light to darkness. To him hate, despair, revenge, envy were causes of evil and darkness in the world and hope, happiness, forgiveness, pat ience were the tools of love and light,Allah's NUR.His teachings are still popular all over the world specially in Pakistan and India.
You can still find some sincere singers who come in the early hours of the morning to sit by his mazaar and sing his kalaam to please Allah.
When they sing all that is false vanishs and all that is true becomes visible, the only thing needed for such a state is the hunger and thirst for truth.

3. messege of his poetry
mostly people critisize bullah shah saying hez a munafiq and stuff by reading his poetry becuse they dont understand the dept of his poetries they dont get what hes trying to say ...bullah shah was not only a sufi but before that he was fighting to be a true muslim a momen ,not those extremist types and as we muslims all know that the rights of humen (haquooq_ul_ebad) r concidered a higer priority then any thing else... and bullah shah poetry gives us the messege of that ..

Allah humma Salleh Alla Mohammad! Sallellah ho Alai Wassalm.
I have only heard a little of Baba's a poetry; his words speak for him and Allah will raise him high close to Him in all times.
No matter how you try to mix the Truth with falsehood, Allah Almighty protects His men! Baba Shah sahib is a beloved son in the family of our Beloved Prophet Sallallah Ho Alai Hi Wassallam.
Eyes are gone blind, ears deaf bodys are dumb and hearts are sealed! cannot feel fragrance of this Wali of Allah who loves Allah and belongs to His beloved family. These men came to show you light, with Quran in their hearts and blood; those who HE chose to see! saw it and took it. Others tried to mix it with what These Men had Broken! And later generation got a wealth to mix them in music, as if They came to revive music?

They did not use sword... did they?????

Allah The Most Merciful sent you men to talk to you they way you used to like to talk or speak, and excel and feel proud in these areas ... music, poetry, ... but He kept His Wali's esteem and respect high while giving them upper edge over the acts supporting falsehood.

7. hy
nice reply M.S.Bains.
Men like Aurangzeb, Nadir Shah and Ahmed shah were never muslims because Mohammad, the Muslim Prophet/Guru, never preached such tyranny as they did.

Baba Bulleh Shah ji, Sayeen Miaan Mir ji, Bhgat Kabir ji, Baba Nanak ji, Baba Jyoti Shah ji, Shah Hussain ji, Amrita Pritam ji, Darshan Singh Awara ji........all such pious Sufi-sants&poets allways preached through their deeds, humanity and tolerance. They alway oppose tyranny either by muslim rulers or by non-muslims beacuse a tyrant has no relegion there relegion is just "eating flesh of poor people".
Infect, if you read Bulleh's verses you'll find that his moral support was with Sikhs Gurus during their fight with so-called muslims the Mughals beacuse Bulleh ji saw in Gurus the real diffenders of human rights and humanity.

With due respect to Baba Ji, I have listened to his great Kafi "Bulle Ki Jana Mein Kaun" He is in quest for self realization, not a follower of any established orthodox religion, such as Islam and Hinduism. The modern Sikhism, Monotheistic religion, was in existence in Punjab at the time of Bulleh' birth (1680); however, it was still in its infancy, and under assault from both Hindus and Muslims because it rejected the parochial outlook of both. Guru Arjan was executed in 1606 soon after he compiled the Sikh Scripture(Aadi Granth), and built Harimandir as a commonplace of worship for all humans in 1604. Five years after Baba Ji's birth, the 9th Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur was also Muslim ruler Aurangzeb in 1675. No wonder Bulleh Shah's remains were not allowed to be burried in Kasur his home town becuase Islam all others Kafirs. Guru Gobind Singh had to fight against this injustice or man's right to religion, yet his four sons were cruly done to death by the emperors. Sikhs have very high regard for Baba Ji, and other Sufi saints. Does any Muslim understand, Sain Mian Mir, a reverred Sufi Saint was invigted from Lahore, who laid the foundation for the Harimandir (the Golden Temple, though the intolerant Muslim invadors, Nadir Shah, and Ahmad Shah desecrated, and demolished it twice in mid eithteenth century. Bulleh Shah like the Sikh Masters preached man to look inward to improve himself, rather than merely call themselves either Muslims or Hindus. Baba Ji was ahead of his time.

11. RE: M.S.Virick
You wrote, "As a Sikh I hold him in same reverence as best of my teachers".

what is meant by 'as a sikh'? dear! in Bulleh Shah's philosphy there is neither sikh nor muslim or hindu; there is only humans.
Not only you but we all hold him in the same revence as best of our teachers.

Yes, he is the same poet. You must have heard the song 'Bulla Ki Jana mein Kaun' by Rabbi Shergil. That poetry is also by Bulleh Shah.

15. I am slave to none
I am emancipated, emancipated I am,
I am no prisoner of being born a Syed,
All the fourteen heavens are my territory,
I am slave to none.
Only they shout loud while calling others to prayer
Whose hearts are not pure .
Those who go to Mecca on pilgrimage
Have little else to occupy them here.

17. The Mughals quaff.....
The Mughals quaff the cup of poison.
Those with coarse blankets are up.
The genteel watch it all in quiet,
They have a humble pie to sup.
The tide of the times is in spate.
The Punjab is in a fearsome state.
We have to share the hell of a fate.

18. Your Love...
Your love has made me dance allover.
Falling in love with you
Was supping a cup of poison.
Come, my healer, it's my final hour.
Your love has made me dance all over.

19. To You Inayat, My Lord
Leaving my parents, I am tied to you
Oh Shah Inayat! My beloved Guru

Whatever happens is ordained by him.
His mandate none dare alter.

My pangs of agony cry aloud
Someone should go and tell my Master
For whom I pine.

21. There is only one thread of all cotton.
There is only one thread of all cotton.
The warp, the woof, the quill of the weaver's shuttle,
The shuttle, the texture of cloths, the cotton shoes and hanks of yarn,
All are known by their respective names,
And they all belong to their respective places
But there is only one thread of yarn.

22. The soil is in ferment, O comrade
The soil is in ferment, O comrade
Behold the diversity.
The soil is the horse, so is the rider
The soil chases the soil, and we hear the clanging of soil
The soil kills the soil, with weapons of the soil.
That soil with more on it, is arrogance
The soil is the garden so is its beauty
The soil admires the soil in all its wondrous forms
After the circle of life is done it returns to the soil
Answer the riddle O Bulleh, and take this burden off my head

27. Sufi sant (saint)
Baba Bule Shah's verses (taecings) are quoted in many satsangs (like Radha Soami Satsang. Beas)Because his verses are not for one relegion but for whole mankind. We can learn devotion to God almighty and love the whole mankind without thevdifference of cast andcreed.

31. Salute
Dear All,

I first came across his poeatry in 2000 and was hooked forever. Both to him and Begum Abida. Even Wadali brothers are just as good.

In the simplest of words the deepest of feelings are conveyed.

The impact they left behind refuses to move.

In case you happen to know other singers who has rendered his words please do update me.

Regards
